Oberstaufen in Bavaria
The timeshare complex sits just south of town, hanging onto the side of a steep hill. The apartment blocks sit astride a central road that runs west from the entrance, also up a steep slope. The downside is cars are only allowed down by the entrance, so if your rooms are at the far end of the road, it is a log trek with your luggage.

Half way up on the left is a nice small bar and café’, run by a couple of English guys, who can give you the low-down on the resort an area, nice food as well. By the entrance is the main bar and restaurant with a nice outside terrace. The pool complex is down this end, as well as a huge, deep spacious Jacuzzi. Sun loungers and an outside sun terrace compliment the pool.

The town of Oberstaufen itself is very picturesque and a lovely place to walk around. You can walk to town via a winding path from the resort, a stiff twenty minute trek, reward yourself with a beer or ‘Radler’ and sit and watch the world go by at one of the many café’s in the town. If you turn left right from the resort you get down to where the main cable car is, take it to the top and have a meal in the Alpine restaurant, then work it off by walking down!

Get yourself a pair of ski poles though in town, much cheaper than at the cable car shops, to aid walking.  In the area a mile or so before the main cable car is a smaller open single seat ski lift. This one is great, taking you out over a school and golf course before climbing up into the mountains, a well marked track takes you back to town, and yes there is a café at the top as well.
There is a lot to see in the surrounding area within an hours drive, but the places not to miss are the lake just down the road at Immenstad, used as a resort and boating centre in the summer.

Neuschwanstien castle, as seen in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang movie, take the bus up to the Maria Bridge, high above the castle. Walk onto the bridge for stunning photographs overlooking the Disneyesque castle. Then climb down and visit the palace and take a picture of the bridge, far above you, real fairytale stuff. There is a good selection of restaurants at the base of the castle, we enjoyed a very nice lunch watching the coaches disgorge the next load of visitors and soaking in the view, reasonable prices too.
